Starting Points

We strongly recommend you read the FAQ for students, parents, and guardians.

If you want to know more about the University judicial process:

Process for Most Cases

Notification and First Meeting

If you have been accused of a Judicial Code violation, you will receive an official letter from the Judicial Administrator advising you of the charges lodged against you. You will have an opportunity to provide your version of the event in question, and to give any additional information to the Judicial Administrator during your conference.

Decision-Making Process

After all of the information is received and reviewed by the Judicial Administrator, a decision will be made on whether it is more likely than not that a violation of the Judicial Code occurred.

Violation found

If there is a finding that a violation has occurred, appropriate sanctions will be assigned. They can range from a simple warning up to and including removal from University housing and denial of access to University resources.

No violation found

If there is a finding that no violation has occurred, the charges will be dismissed.

Process for Serious Cases

Notification and Meeting

As with all cases, if your case is of a more serious nature, you will receive an official letter from the Judicial Administrator advising you of the charges lodged against you. You will have an opportunity to provide your version of the event in question, and to give any additional information to the Judicial Administrator during your conference.

Decision-Making Process

The Judicial Administrator will then decide that the matter should be adjudicated via the University Judicial Board (UJB). The UJB's ability to sanction includes suspensions and expulsions. Examples of serious misconduct may include but are not limited to: aggravated assault, sexual assault, distribution of illegal substances, and multiple or egregious violations of academic integrity.

You will provided with a detailed outline of the process and procedures governing the University Judicial Board Process.

Appeal Process

Whether the JA or the UJB decides your case, you are permitted one appeal. Appeals are limited to situations where an unfair hearing is alleged or that the sanctions imposed are excessive. Those appellate rights can be found in the Judicial Code, section IV.A.2.B.
